Recipients of the minority women grants should know the rules about the grants. For instance, the federal Pell grant does not have to be repaid, as long as all academic requirements are met. For many minority single mothers, attending school is an uphill battle. The high cost of a college education and the difficulty of balancing a job and the care for a child can be difficult to overcome. The federal government offers a number of scholarships meant for historically under-represented groups and those facing hard financial situations. One federal program is the Federal Pell Grants. Minority single mothers can apply for the Pell Grants. However, their grant's amount is based upon what school the student attends, the student's financial situation, the student's status as a full or part time student, and how long the student wishes to attend the college. Similar to Pell Grants, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) acts as a credit toward the school the mother wishes to attend. Both of these examples are not loans.

States have programs for minority single mothers to attend college. One example is the Arkansas Single Parent Fund. The funds are distributed to single parents who desire to attend college. Although the fund is meant for any single parent, the organization says its funds benefit women the most. Over 23 percent of Arkansas families are headed by a single mother, according to the Arkansas Single Parent Fund. The fund aids thousands of single mothers per year across Arkansas. In Idaho, the state offers its citizens the Idaho Minority and "At-Risk" Scholarship. This scholarship is given to any Idaho resident that is a first generation college student and from a historically under-represented group.

There are several non-profit organizations that offer scholarships to minority single mothers. One example is Raise the Nation, an organization that gives college grants to single mothers with a track record of community service. Another example is the Jeanette Rankin Foundation. The Jeanette Rankin Foundation distributes college grants to women in desperate economic need. Not all of the examples specifically focus on minority single mothers, but their programs help women attend college. For example, the Business and Professional Women's Association helps women who are typically not of college age re-enter college and many of their grantees are minority single mothers.

Available research grants are plentiful for minority undergraduate and graduate students, particularly in the social and natural sciences. These grants are offered by private foundations as well as government entities.

National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds research opportunities for undergraduate students in any area of research sponsored by the NSF. Research areas include chemistry, physics, education and computer science. Interested students must submit a proposal and if accepted, will receive stipends toward the cost of living, housing and travel. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. American Psychological Association

For minority graduate students interested in careers in mental health, the American Psychological Association offers several grants, including the Dissertation Research Award. This $1,000 grant is awarded to 30 to 40 doctoral students annually, to assist them with research costs. Exceptional applicants may be awarded a larger grant of $5,000.

American Political Science Association Minority Fellows Program

The American Political Science Association sponsors a Minority Fellows Program for prospective doctoral students with a demonstrated interest in political science research and teaching. The program, in existence for 40 years, awards up to 12 fellowships each year, valued at $4,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and submit GRE scores, transcripts and three recommendations from faculty members, along with a personal statement, at the time of application.

It is a common misconception that the federal government provides free grant money for businesses. Nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and state and local governments are eligible for federal grants. USDA Grant

Through the Rural Business Opportunity Grant, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds up to $150,000 to grantees in rural communities. The funds provide training and technical assistance to rural American Indian tribes, cooperatives and nonprofit corporations that perform new or ongoing business development that benefits their members.

SBA Grant

The Program for Investment in Entrepreneurs Act works with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to provide grants between $50,000 and $250,000 to "microenterprise" organizations and programs that deliver services to entrepreneurs. A stronger focus is used if the business owner is female, an American Indian tribe or an organization that reports to an American Indian tribe. State Grants

States offer funding through such programs as the Iowa Department of Economic Development's targeted small business assistance option. While this grant specifies that minorities may apply, the business must have existed for at least three years and must have less than $4 million in annual income to qualify. It will still be eligible, however, as long as the owner remains a first-time owner. Women, members of minorities and disabled persons must own and operate at least 51 percent of the business to qualify. The maximum funding that the program awards is $50,000.

Georgia-Pacific Grant

Georgia-Pacific is a multinational producer of pulp, paper and tissue products. Founded in 1927, the company funds programs that improve the lives of people in the communities where it operates. Projects, programs or business ventures in entrepreneurship that positively affect the local community are eligible for grants, and minority business owners may qualify if they fit these criteria.

Amber Foundation Grant

Launched in 1998, the Amber Foundation's purpose is to honor the memory of a young 19-year-old woman who died before she was able to realize her dreams. Grants range from $500 to $1,500 and are available for women of all cultural groups to fund small expenses incurred in the start-up of a business.

Business Loans

The SBA offers low-interest loans to eligible business owners who are women and members of minorities. These loans are usually obtainable without a credit report and are repayable over a long period. Although these are not grants, they are financial assistance to first-time minority business owners.
