For thousands of students each year, the cost of funding their education can often be the determining factor in whether they pursue higher degrees or not. However, there are hundreds of options for students looking to go back and head into graduate study. For minority doctoral students looking to specialize in education, there are a number of options that can reduce the financial stresses of going back for another degree.

Strategy for Finding Aid

It can often be difficult for doctoral students to find the amount of aid that is at the disposal of undergraduates. When looking for these sources of financial assistance, it is important to be specific in your search. Often, the most valuable resource is the specific college or university at which the student is attending, because national awards can sometimes be few and far between. Though scholarships and grants maybe more difficult to find at this stage of the educational game, fellowships and teaching assistantships can often be helpful in providing the majority of the funding for a doctoral degree.

Minority Dissertation Fellowship

One of the largest opportunities for doctoral students studying education is the American Research Association's Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research. Three fellowships are given each year to doctoral students pursuing in-depth research into education. The winners receive a $12,000, one-year stipend and up to $1,000 in travel expenses. AERA also encourages the winners' college or university to provide supplements to the fellowships.

Diversity Fellowships

Another opportunity for those looking to pursue doctoral studies in education is the Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship program. Offering a three-year, $17,000 stipend for students pursuing studies in a number of fields, education among them, this fellowship program is open to a number of under-represented groups, including Latino, African-American and Native American students.

Doctoral Scholars Program

The Southern Regional Education Board offers doctoral students three to five years of financial support for their research through their scholars program. The award comes with three years of direct support from the Southern Regional Education Board and then is followed by two years of support from the student's college or university, typically as a $15,000 to $20,000 annual stipend. In addition, the award also comes with a fee and tuition waiver, assuming that the institution the student is studying through does not prohibit this.

Institutional Awards

Many colleges and universities award fellowships and generous stipends to education doctoral students. For instance, Michigan State University offers an award to doctoral students that will cover 50 percent of their research assistantship and also provide $1,500 in travel expenses. Though there are no stipulations on what subject students must specialize in, they are required to attend events sponsored and organized by the school.
